The battery of Ather 450X

The battery pack is the heart of every electric scooter.  Ather uses 21700 cells for its battery pack. These cells together give the battery capacity of 2.9 kWh. Out of this 2.6 kWh is usable energy. So 0.3 kWh has been intentionally made unusable. This reduces the effective number of charge cycles and increases battery life. The manufacturer recommends that unnecessary charging should not be done and fast charging should be avoided.

Battery life is around 50, 000 kilometers. So if your average use of scooter is 25 Km per day then the battery will last for 5 years or more. A new battery costs around Rs 45000. But in coming years cost of Lithium-Ion battery will certainly go down.

The battery pack degrades with age. The degradation is about 20% in 3 years. In addition, the battery degrades by 2% for every 10, 000 Km of the run. Due to these factors, the charge holding capacity of the battery goes down. The battery does not become useless. It just requires more frequent charging.

Ather Energy tracks each battery for its health. The manufacturer gives 3 years unlimited mileage warranty on the battery. During these 3 years, if the capacity of the battery goes below 70%, it will be replaced free of cost.

You can put Ather 450X in Deep Sleep Mode if you intend not to use the scooter for few days or few weeks. You can shut the scooter down from the dashboard. This prevents the idle battery from draining.
